The Lava River Cave is just 30 minutes away from Flagstaff, Arizona. The cave itself was formed 700,000 years ago - at that time, molten lava erupted out of nearby Harts Prairie. The cave was founded in 1915 by lumbermen in the area.

Here in Phoenix, there are two growing seasons (mid-February until the end of May and mid-September to mid-November).   We just finished planting quite a bit in our backyard a few weeks ago and are growing so many things this year.

So much fun!

Although it does get really hot here, many plants do incredibly well – cucumbers, squash, watermelon, honeydew, and even strawberries. I know my plants are thriving right now and I’m excited to put in the last of them here over the weekend.

Seed Library Locations

If you plan on having a garden at your home again this year like we are, or you would like to start a garden… the Mesa Main Public Library on 64 E. First St. offers a Seed Lending Program.

The Seed Library is stored in an unused card catalog at 2 Mesa Library Locations:

Main Library
64 E. 1st St.
Mesa, AZ 85201

Red Mountain Library
635 N. Power Rd.
Mesa, AZ 85205

Mesa Public Library cardholders can check out up to 3 packets per month.  Card holders are also encouraged to donate seeds back to the Seed Library at the end of the growing season.

The Seed Library focuses on edible plants that are well suited for the Arizona climate.   The library also features free classes on Seed Starting, Seed Saving and How to Cook from your Garden.

The Seed Garden is open during regular Library hours:

  • Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Friday & Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, Closed

The Garden is run by Volunteers – – read more about the Seed Library.

If you are not in Mesa, there is also a Seed Library at the Glendale Main Public Library and one at the Valley Permaculture Alliance Office on 5151 N. 19th Ave., Suite 200 in Phoenix (zip 85015), Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

(Not in Phoenix/Mesa? Tucson also has a seed library for Pima County residents!)
