The Lava River Cave is just 30 minutes away from Flagstaff, Arizona. The cave itself was formed 700,000 years ago - at that time, molten lava erupted out of nearby Harts Prairie. The cave was founded in 1915 by lumbermen in the area.

Do it Yourself: Vinegar & Bath Towels (Get Rid of that Mildew Smell)

Frugal Living

Capture

By now you should know that THIS stuff is one of my FAVORITE things to have in my house besides a box of Borax. Why?  Because it does practically everything.

I use it in my dishwasher in lieu of Jet Dry, I use it in my rinse cycle when I wash clothes…   I use it in a bottle to spray in my shower. I even freeze it in ice cube trays and put them in the garbage disposal to "clean it out" when It gets stinky.

And today, well, my goal is to wash all of our bath towels & use Vinegar to make any of the potential “stink” go away. Now we’re not dirty people, but for some reason, after time, towels start to get this mildew smell. It’s absolutely frustrating…..   I want my towels to smell normal again.

So….this is what you do:

  1. Put your "like" colored towels in the Washer.

  2. Wash in hot water with 1 1/2 cups vinegar — no detergent

  3. Do a second wash in hot water – no vinegar, just detergent

  4. Dry!

I am eager to have my regular towels back again.

I’m not sure how Sheryl does it, but I usually dump vinegar into the dishwasher basin about once a month and run a hot cycle to clean it out. I’ve also dumped the vinegar into the basin with my dishes and everything came out sparkling – no spots!!

I had this problem for a while and all I had to do to fix it was stop using Tide detergent.

I notice that my washing machine smells like mildew. Did you ever hear of just running a cycle using the vinegar without a load of clothes to get the smell out of the machine?

I know what you are saying about the smell. I think others might not notice because they use perfumed fabric softeners. I started noticing the smell when I first switched to laundry detergent without softeners in order to use cloth diapers. The smell has lessened… but every once in a while… Now I should try this… but won’t my towels start to smell like vinegar?

No – actually they won’t. Fabric Softener creates a waterproof barrier on your towels and makes them less aborbent over time. So I dont use softeners, even ad ryer bar, on mine. Not even dryer sheets.

I use vinegar in the rinse – they wont smell like vinegar, promise =)

Just found your website- love it. I’ve had the stinky towels issue for a few weeks now. Washed it with borax but also with some rude and vinegar as the rinse. Also used sheets. Still stinky-ive been throwing them out like paper towels. Now I know no softeners and just vinegar. Thx
